Canadian Ranger Training

Posted on March 4, 2012

Know the land, know the people. While embedded with the Arctic Response Company Group (ARCG) for Exercise ARCTIC RAM in the Northwest Territories, the soldiers and I spent two days learning from the Canadian Rangers. These men – and women – spend almost all their days in the wilderness, since the region is surrounded by trees and vast lakes.

The rangers taught soldiers how to build a tent with materials from the environment, how to trap animals for food and a little bit of the fishing industry in the north. The events culminated in a large fish fry and a late night bonfire complete with caribou meat (not pictured). Canadian Ranger Training is a collection of images detailing the lessons learned from those to live on the land.
